Tooth Extraction

Safe, Gentle and Expert-Led Dental Extractions

When a tooth has failed to the point it is no longer viable to keep or restore predictably, then we may have to remove it, especially if it is causing pain or discomfort.

This is normally a painless and quick procedure in our experienced hands.  Afterwards we will give you important post-operative instructions to follow to minimise any adverse effects like bleeding or infection.

We will also discuss the best ways to replace the missing tooth to minimise chewing problems, aesthetic problems and issues with unwanted movement of the adjacent teeth.

Extractions are performed under local anesthetic. For nervous patients, we offer sedation to ensure a calm, stress-free experience.

Our clinicians use refined surgical techniques to remove the tooth efficiently and with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue.

Aftercare & Healing

You’ll receive individual aftercare instructions to promote swift healing and reduce the risk of complications.

Replacement Options

If a functional tooth is removed, we’ll discuss long-term restorative solutions, such as dental implants or bridges, to maintain your bite and aesthetics.

When Tooth Extraction Is Needed

And What Comes Next

At ORION Dental, preserving your natural teeth is always our priority.  However, there are cases where removal is the most clinically sound option, particularly when retaining the tooth may compromise your health, comfort or long-term treatment outcomes.

Tooth extraction may be recommended in situations such as:

  • Irreparable decay or structural fracture
  • Infection unresponsive to root canal treatment
  • Advanced gum disease causing significant tooth mobility
  • Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth
  • Teeth obstructing orthodontic or prosthetic plans

Each decision is made with care.  We evaluate all available options and only proceed with extraction when it is clearly in your best interest, ensuring the process is fully explained, pain-free and expertly managed.

What happens after an extraction?

If the tooth plays a functional or aesthetic role , such as a front tooth or a molar affecting your bite,  we’ll discuss suitable replacement solutions during your consultation.

Depending on your clinical needs and preferences, options may include:

  • Dental implants — the gold standard for long-term, natural-looking tooth replacement
  • Bridges — fixed restorations anchored to adjacent teeth
  • Partial dentures — removable options for multiple missing teeth

Our team works closely with trusted implant specialists and dental laboratories to ensure that, if restoration is required, it’s handled with the same level of precision and attention to detail as the extraction itself.

From diagnosis through to full rehabilitation, we provide a seamless, coordinated experience — all from our modern private practice in Eastleigh.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extraction

  • Will the extraction procedure be painful?

Tooth extractions are carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. You may feel some pressure, but we ensure you are comfortable throughout.

Afterwards, it is normal to experience mild soreness for a few days, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief and aftercare advice we provide.

  • How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

Most patients feel noticeably better within a few days. Initial healing of the gum typically takes around 1–2 weeks, although complete healing of the area beneath the surface can take a little longer.

We will provide clear aftercare advice to support a smooth and comfortable recovery.

  • What should I avoid after the procedure?

For the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing vigorously, drinking through a straw, smoking, or consuming hot food and drinks, as this can disturb the healing process.

It is also best to avoid hard, crunchy or chewy foods for a few days and to chew on the opposite side where possible. Following the aftercare advice provided will help support smooth healing and reduce the risk of complications.

  • Do all extractions require replacement?

Not always. In some cases, such as the removal of wisdom teeth, replacement is not necessary.

However, if a back tooth or visible tooth is removed, replacing it is often recommended to prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting and to maintain your bite and appearance. We will discuss the most suitable options with you, which may include a bridge, denture or dental implant.

  • Can I get a dental implant straight after extraction?

In some cases, yes — this is called immediate implant placement. However, it depends on the condition of the surrounding bone and soft tissue. We’ll assess your suitability during your consultation and may recommend a short healing period before placement if required.
