ORION Dental & Implant Centre

Root Canal Treatments

Dr Michael has been accepting referrals for Root Canal Treatment using microscopy for nearly 20 years.

When the nerve of the tooth has become infected and dies due to dental decay, trauma, or even deep fillings, the dead nerve needs to be removed and the canal system of the tooth needs to be disinfected and cleaned with advanced anti microbial systems.

Once it has been disinfected, we seal the tooth with advanced sealers to stop more bacteria entering the tooth. This then allows your body’s own immune system to heal the area around the tooth. Any pain and swelling will subside and you can keep the tooth once it has been restored.

                            What it Involves

Root Canal & Endodontic Treatment: What to Expect

Contrary to popular belief, root canal treatment is not a painful process.  In most cases, the nerve is already dead.

Once this is diagnosed, using accurate X-rays and special testing devices, as well as a detailed patient history we will give you a treatment plan and explain exactly what is involved. We will make sure you are comfortable before we commence any treatment.

Here’s what the treatment journey typically involves:

  • Comprehensive assessment
Using advanced imaging and diagnostics, we evaluate the condition of the tooth and surrounding bone to determine suitability for root canal therapy.

  • Comfort-focused care
Treatment is performed under local anesthetic with the option of sedation. Most patients report little to no discomfort during the procedure.

  • Disinfection and shaping
The infected tissue is removed, and the canals are shaped using specialist rotary instruments and dental microscopy, allowing us to see even the finest canal structures and clean them with exceptional accuracy before sealing.

  • Sealing the canals
A biocompatible material is used to fill the root system, creating a barrier against future infection.

  • Final restoration
Depending on the tooth's location and integrity, we complete treatment with either a high-strength filling or a custom-made crown for long-term durability and aesthetics.

Root canal treatment at our Eastleigh practice is delivered with clinical precision, patient comfort, and long-term results in mind. Our experienced team ensures every stage of the procedure is performed to the highest standard — preserving your natural smile and restoring peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canal Treatment

  • Does root canal treatment hurt?

Modern root canal therapy is virtually pain-free. In fact, it’s often performed to eliminate pain caused by infection or inflammation.

  • Will I need a crown afterwards?

In many cases, yes. After a root canal, the tooth can become more brittle, so a crown is often recommended to protect it and restore strength.

If the tooth is less damaged, a high-strength filling may be suitable. We will advise you on the most appropriate option to ensure long-term success.

  • How long does the procedure take?

Most root canal treatments take between 60 and 90 minutes. In some cases, treatment can be completed in a single visit, while more complex teeth may require two appointments.

We will always explain the expected timeframe before starting your treatment.

  • What is the success rate?

When performed with modern techniques and proper aftercare, success rates exceed 90%.

  • What happens if I don’t have the treatment?

Delaying or avoiding root canal therapy can allow the infection to worsen, potentially leading to severe pain, swelling, bone loss, or tooth loss. In some cases, untreated infections can impact your overall health. Prompt treatment offers the best chance to preserve the tooth and avoid more complex procedures later.

  • Is root canal treatment safe?

Yes. When performed with modern techniques and proper aftercare, root canal treatment is a safe, clinically proven procedure with a very high success rate.  We adhere to strict infection control protocols and use advanced imaging and instrumentation for precise, predictable outcomes.
