Missing teeth - replacing teeth is easy

If you've a missing tooth, you can replace it with a dental implant. An implant is typically a small screw-shaped attachment, usually made from titanium. It's inserted within the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root.

Implants are popular because they:

• are cleaner and more comfortable than dentures, and don't slip or move
• are convenient, and can improve confidence and self-esteem
• are an alternative to bridgework and do away with the need to grind down healthy teeth
• help maintain the shape and structure of the jawbone (bone in a missing tooth area shrinks)

So what's involved?

Well, we'll start by taking an x-ray and assessment. Then there's the implanting - a minor surgical procedure under local anaesthetic in our clinic - followed by a period to let the bone attach firmly to the implant. Then we simply restore your tooth, using a crown, bridge or overdenture. It's often less traumatic having an implant placed than a tooth removed!

Our Principal Dentist, Philip Sommereux , has a special interest in implants and is studying for a Diploma in Implantology at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
